06-27-2011: Nu Chapter Spring 2011 Update
As one of the pillars of Pi Delta Psi, we are always looking for ways to increase awareness of the Asian community on campus. One of the staple events that we have done since the start of our chapter at Carnegie Mellon is our Iron Chef competition. This year was our 8th annual competition, with the secret ingredient being corn. Our event is always improving throughout the years, and this year was the same. Participation from the Greek community had improved greatly, and the audience was a lively one. We had a sponsorship from Hokkaido which allowed us to provide a buffet table that welcomed more guests to our event. We were even able to create the dramatic effect of misty fog flowing off the secret ingredients table thanks to the use of dry ice.
In the absence of the annual Dragon Boating event, a new event was created: Spicy Food Night. In this event, we explore the different spicy dishes from Asia and introduce them to the audience. This event was as successful as our Iron Chef competition, if not more.
We had a huge audience and a huge buffet in the back to accompany them. For the entertainment, we had a spicy food contest, where each level would increase in hotness. We encouraged everyone to enter the contest, and even created custom shirts for them to don while trying to accomplish the task. The audience watched as contestants struggled to stay within the competition. We can even proudly admit to causing severe pain for those who made it to the last level. We hope to make this another annual event. In addition to these annual events, we have continued to participate in other events such as Culture Night and ARCC’s Night Market.
Pi Delta Psi also has a long history of giving back to the community, and this year it hasn’t changed. We participated in events such as Relay for Life, 1000Plus, Donut Dash, Pray for Japan, and Greek Sing. Whether it be cleaning up the earth or donating to important causes, one thing is sure: No matter the event, Pi Delta Psi will always continue to do its best to give to the community.
06-11-2011: 4th Annual “Think Pink” Charity Ball
Hosted by the Brothers of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity Tau Chapter and the Sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi Sorority Nu Chapter at Pennsylvania State University
This year marked the fourth annual “Think Pink” Charity Ball brought to the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University by Pi Delta Psi and alpha Kappa Delta Phi. This year’s Charity Ball was hosted on April 10th in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Alumni Hall.
Every year, this Charity Ball is created to raise funds to aid the battle against Breast Cancer. Over the past 3 years, this event was solely hosted by the sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi, but this year, the brothers of Pi Delta Psi joined in to help the cause. It is a semi-formal event in which students, teachers, or residents of Penn State campus may attend and included food and various entertainment. The two organizations hoped that by working together, this event would become more successful. Indeed it did, for this year, the event raised over $800.00 for Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade, which was the greatest turn-out over the past four years!
This event was planned since fall semester of 2010 and preparations were done all the way until the day of the Ball in the spring semester of 2011. This year’s Charity Ball was a karaoke-themed event, in which participants of the event may request one song to sing for the night with their various groups of friends. Other forms of entertainment that was featured during the event included a homemade video that informed the audience of various facts about Breast cancer, a live musical performance, and a silent auction. The audience also received free pins as favors for attending the event. Food was catered to them from a local catering service and a local Chinese restaurant.
04-18-2011: Pi Delta Psi raises funds for Japan
Pi Delta Psi raises funds for Japan relief shirt proceeds
Less than four weeks after an 8.9 magnitude offshore earthquake created a massive tsunami in Japan, UCF's Pi Delta Psi fraternity took measures to raise relief money for victims.
Since the week of March 22, the Asian cultural interest fraternity has raised more than $2,000 by selling T-shirts in front of the Student Union.
Pi Delta Psi partnered with one of their alumni, Michael Cho, who owns the T-shirt company Impress Ink.
All proceeds from the $15 T-shirts, which have the Japanese character for ‘love' and ‘Japan' incorporated into the design, will go to the victims.
"The T-shirts are fashionable and have a message, which makes them more appealing to a college crowd," Cho said.
News of the T-shirts, which are available on Impress Ink's website, has traveled fast and led to orders being placed from New York and as far as the west coast.
Cho said the feedback has been overwhelming, but that he appreciates the interest in the cause.
The earthquake hits home for Pi Delta Psi brother and finance major Junichi Hirano, who has family in Japan.
Hirano said his father and uncle experienced the aftershock of the earthquake, but are doing well. However, friends of his father and uncle are suffering from the effects of the natural disaster and the radiation from the nuclear power plants.
"Even now, the situation hasn't gotten better," Hirano said. "Any bit of help makes a difference."
Hirano said he feels that selling T-shirts gives a non-verbal message that raises awareness in a way that regular fundraising often does not. He said he's proud of his fraternity for getting everything together so quickly because the effects of this natural disaster are not going away any time soon.
"Many people did not know or understand the magnitude of the situation until Pi Delta Psi brought the awareness to the university," said former fraternity president Chris Chen, who is working on a different charity effort for Japan.
Chen is directing and coordinating a "Kings of the Court" basketball tournament set for April 24. Last year, the funds went to Haiti.
Peter Le, the current president of Pi Delta Psi and and a junior micro & molecular biology major, helped put this event together because of Hirano's Japanese descent and the Asian cultural interest.
Though Le has been a part of other fundraising events, he said that this is the largest.
"If any disaster happens in an Asian country, we'll be the first ones to help," Le said.
Pi Delta Psi has done many other charity events in the past including raising money for the victims of an earthquake in China, Operation Smile to help children with cleft lips around the world and more recently Relay for Life, said Ricky Ly. Ly founded the fraternity with Cho on the belief that brotherhood should be combined with community service and cultural awareness.
Le said he wants to thank everyone who supported Pi Delta Psi in its efforts and appreciates everyone pitching in for a good cause.
‘Love for Japan' T-shirts can be ordered at ImpressInk.com and picked up or shipped.
